STOP SMOKING for as long as possible before your operation. Smoking should be absolutely avoided within 12 hours of surgery. This is to improve the ability of your blood to carry oxygen and reduce the other adverse effects smoking has on anaesthesia and surgery. Even stopping smoking for 12 hours prior to surgery may reduce some of these adverse effects and improve your recovery. Stopping smoking for weeks to months before your operation will have even more beneficial effects.
