It is quite common to have a head cold with runny nose, headache, sore throat, non-productive cough – particularly through winter. In most cases, it is very safe to proceed with surgery and anaesthesia. Concerning features are a fever >38 degrees Celsius, a thick productive or green cough, very poor fluid intake, or wheeze and shortness of breath. If you have concerning features, please contact your anaesthetist for further discussion prior to your operation.
